Ms. Alix S
Alix Smith began playing the flute in 2005, studying under Jan McDonald and Wendy Stern. She participated in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, All-State Symphony Orchestra, New York Youth Symphony Chamber Program, Tanglewood Flute Workshop, and Oberlin Conservatory Flute Institute as well as attending masterclasses with artists including Jasmine Choi, Emmanuel Pahud, Jeanne Baxtresser, and Ian Clark. Alix then studied under Judith Mendenhall during her undergraduate at Aaron Copland School of Music through Macaulay Honors College, as well as performing with Gamelan Yowana Sari around the U.S. and Bali. Alix currently maintains lessons under Keith Underwood while working as a freelance musician in and around New York. One of Alix’s greatest joys in her music career is teaching. Welcoming students of all ages and levels, Alix knows that anyone with a fondness for music is capable of developing their skills and expression. The task of guiding a musician to recognize their strengths, set goals, and make informed choices about how to approach a piece of music is one of the most gratifying forms of collaboration. Alix’s students regularly achieve outstanding scores on their musical exams, such as NYSSMA, and pass auditions for programs such as Kids On Stage at Carnegie Hall, and Laguardia High School of Music & Art. With a focus on improving listening skills, reading skills, and technical efficiency, the unlocked ability for students to use their own musical voice is highly rewarding and offers unlimited growth.
